How we made this

What's included. New energy and electrification policies announced by each party for the 2026 election, published on the party's website or in its official announcements up to . "New" means something the party says it will do next term. Policies already in place under the current Government aren't included, so for National, ACT and NZ First this page shows their new commitments only.

Which parties, and in what order. Parties with MPs in the last Parliament, plus The Opportunity Party. They're listed in order of their 2023 party vote.

Who wrote the summaries. Rewiring Aotearoa staff, from each party's own material. Every party's policies are written in the same plain style so they're easier to compare. Summaries leave out detail, so please read the full policy on the party's site.

What we didn't do. We haven't scored, ranked or costed any policy, and we don't say which party is better. "Nothing new announced" means we didn't find a new policy on that topic. It doesn't mean the party has no view.

Corrections. If you think something is wrong or missing, email hello@rewiring.nz with a link to the source and we'll check it, usually within one working day.

Questions to ask your candidate

Going to a meet-the-candidates event, or got a candidate at your door? These questions work for any party. Ask everyone the same thing.

  1. Home upgrade loans. Several parties have proposed low-cost loans for solar, batteries and insulation. Would your party pass the law needed for the Ratepayer Assistance Scheme, and how soon?
  2. Renters. What would your party do so renters can get solar, plug-in solar or EV charging where they live?
  3. Upfront cost of EVs. Would your party support letting employees lease an EV from their pre-tax salary, or changing fringe benefit tax on business EVs?
  4. EV charging. What would your party do to get more public and home EV charging, especially outside the main cities?
  5. Gas. Domestic gas supply is falling. What is your party's plan for businesses that rely on gas, and would you help them switch to electricity?
  6. Power prices. What, specifically, would your party change to bring down power bills for households over the next three years?
  7. Selling solar back. What would your party do about the price households and communities are paid for power they export to the grid?
  8. Data centres. New data centres need a lot of power. Who should pay for that new generation and the grid connections?
  9. Trades. Who's going to install all of this? What would your party do to train more electricians, plumbers and installers?
  10. The long term. Would your party commit to a cross-party energy strategy that lasts beyond one term of government?
  11. Where you stand. Your party hasn't announced anything new on [topic] yet. What is its position?

What we're asking every party

Rewiring Aotearoa has asked all parties to commit to two key policies and six election asks. These are our views, based on our research. We've put them here so you know where we're coming from. They are not used to score or rank the parties above.

Loans for affordable home upgrades

Ratepayer Assistance Scheme (RAS)

Long-term, low-interest electrification loans via councils, at 1 to 1.5% below bank mortgage rates and repayable over the life of the machine. Our ask: introduce the enabling RAS legislation within the first 100 days.

Better access to electric vehicles

EV Salary Boost and fringe benefit tax changes

Let employees lease a new or second-hand EV from pre-tax pay, and remove or reduce fringe benefit tax on EVs so businesses electrify their fleets. Our ask: enable EV Salary Boost and remove or reduce FBT on EVs.
